BORN x GARMIN: #activayconecta
Tuesday, October 19 was the International Day Against Breast Cancer. For this reason, we partnered with Garmin, a worldwide reference brand in satellite navigation, to raise funds to help breast cancer research with the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC).
We launch an action with which we promote a healthy lifestyle. From the Instagram account of @bornlivingyoga y @garmin_iberiawe will offer four live classes of yoga, pilates and hiit, with personalities such as Carla Pereyra, Pau Inspirafit, Isabel del Barrio and Virginia Troconis. Our challenge: to surpass 1000 views to make the maximum donation for research.
With our campaign #activayconecta we raise our voice and promote this movement to, united, raise as much money as possible to help breast cancer research.
Breast cancer: its dimension
From the AECC insist that early detection of the disease will not only save your life, but will allow you to go through it in a less traumatic way.
In Spain, approximately 16,000 new cases of breast cancer are detected every year, and according to the World Health Organization (WHO), one out of every 8 women will be affected by this tumor. This is why early detection campaigns and mammography programs are gaining more and more visibility. The message is clear: early detection of breast cancer has a better chance of cure.
Steps to perform a breast self-examination
Starting at age 20, it is recommended that all women perform breast self-examinations at least once a month.
1. Stand in front of the mirror with your arms down. Try to look for symmetry between the two breasts, no alterations in the shape of the nipple-areola complex, and normal breast size, shape and color. Palpate as if you were trying to locate a lump or abnormality.
2. While standing, raise one arm and explore that breast. Make small clockwise circles in the armpit and end at the nipple, going over the entire area. Look for any visible changes by comparing the shape with the arms raised and lowered.
3. Lie on your back, and perform all of the above movements. Start palpating gently and apply more pressure with your fingertips, keeping your fingers straight and close together. The movement should always be circular.
4. Gently squeeze the nipples to check for any abnormal fluid.
Warning signs
Apart from palpating to see if you can locate a lump, there are some signs that can serve as an alarm. However, if you have any of these symptoms, for a real and professional diagnosis, you should see your doctor.
Possible warning signs:
- Growing veins
- Erosions in the skin
- Sinking of the nipple
- Orange skin
- Redness and burning
- Hollows, indentations or lumps in the shape of the breast
- Asymmetries
- Unfamiliar fluid around the nipple
- Hardening of the breast
How to help breast cancer research?
The Spanish Association Against Cancer is a Spanish non-profit organization formed by patients, their families, volunteers, collaborators and professionals. Its mission is to work to educate on health issues, support and accompany patients and their families during the challenge, and also help fund research projects in order to achieve a better diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The AECC not only helps patients during the challenge, but also accompanies them afterwards to lessen the impact that cancer can have on their lives.
You can collaborate through a direct donation to AECC or by supporting actions that, like ours, aim to raise as much money as possible to allocate it to research for AECC.
